Born in Reus (Catalonia, Spain) the 25th of June 1852, Antoni Placid Guillem Gaudi I Cornet is surely one of the most outstanding architects Spain and Barcelona ever had. The Catalan architect belongs to the modernist style movement and is famous for his unique designs and buildings of its long career you can admire in Barcelona and surrounding. After his regular curse in Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura in Barcelona from 1873 to 1877, Gaudi’s first works were designed of gothic and traditional Spanish style. But soon, after a short stay in Paris where he met Eusebi Guell one of his supporter and friend, Gaudi started to express his interest for modernism, the in vogue architectural movement of the new industrial Europe from late 19th century. After a deep study Gaudi developed new method of structural calculation used in his design. After being ridiculed in his own land, Barcelona, Gaudi became slowly, supported by his friends Guell and Georges Orwell, a recognized and appreciate architect. Inspired by his devotion for Catholicism, he realized the most emblematic building you can still admire in Barcelona: Casa Vicens, Palau Guell, The crypt of Colonial Guell, Casa Calvet, Casa Batllo, Casa Milla (La Pedrera), Park Guell and the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi was also known for his originality out of Catalonia, like New York where he realized plan for a Manhattan Skyscraper hotel or for the furniture he designed. Today most of its work is part of the Unesco World Patrimony. |
