Palau de la Musica

El Palau de la Musica has been for hundred years a privileged scene for the international and national concerts of Barcelona. Designed by the architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, el Palau was built between 1905 and 1908 entirely with public donations for the Orfeo Catala, a choral society funded in 1891. Jewel of modernism, el Palau de la Musica is located on the border with the old town and the Eixample district very close to Via Laitena. The Facade is decorated of traditional Spanish and Arabic architecture, a great mix of red brick, iron, mosaics, stained glass and glazed tiles. But the most impresive is without any doubts its concert hall of 2200 seats. During day an enormous skylight of stained glass illuminates the hall, unique auditorium of this type in Europe. In 2004, the Petit Palau, a modern extansion of the old building was designed to offer more capacity with a small hall of 556 seats equipped with variable acoustics to offer wider range of music.
In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a Unesco World Heritage
Today, more than half a million people a year attend musical performances in the Palau that range from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Cançó (Catalan song).
Every night is a cultural asset full of light and color, offering concerts, conferences, exhibitions of all genders and styles. Reason why it became a reference in the cultural and social life of the city of Barcelona. The Palau de la Música Catalana organises daily guided tours of the Modernist Concert hall and, when available, Lluís Millet Hall and the Chamber Music Hall.
